“We didn’t really announce it because it doesn’t matter,” he said about the birth of his son. “To me, it matters a great deal. Let me make that clear.”
“This is not a royal baby,” he explained about why the birth did not receive a public announcement. “In terms of how far in line he is to the throne, it’s a peasant. I have a peasant child. So it didn’t even cross my mind that we should make a public thing about it.”
Oliver then recalled a conversation he had at the Emmys about how tired he was due to the new baby. “And then the next day there were a bunch of stories about ‘John Oliver Has Secret Baby,'” he recalled. “You go, ‘Whoa! Whoa, whoa, whoa. I had a baby with my wife. She knew about it the whole time.'”
“I just made a judgment call that it was not high-value information for anybody. It felt arrogant to walk out on Pride Rock. ‘I have spawned another child,'” he said as he pretended to lift an imaginary baby up.
Host Jimmy Fallon then asked Oliver about his role as Zazu in the upcoming Lion King movie. The trailer for the highly anticipated film received 45 million views within two days of its release.
“I’ll take credit for, let’s say, 400 of those,” Oliver said about the number of viewers. “Let’s give the rest to Beyonce.”
“It’s my first time kind of being inside a Disney tornado,” he said. Oliver told Fallon that the cast received an email that shared when the trailer would drop and told the actors to keep the information a secret. “Coming from Disney, that just sounds like a threat,” he said.
Oliver added that he watched the trailer with his wife’s family during their Thanksgiving celebration. “They played the trailer and then there’s everyone’s names and they’re all in The Lion King font and that’s objectively exciting,” he said. “I was sitting with my wife’s sister and her cousin and it got to the end and ‘Oh, that’s nice.’ And her cousin said, ‘Why is your name before Beyonce’s? That seems pretty fucked up.'”
