Justin Lin is headed to Apple.
In a massive blow to Sony, the director and his production company Perfect Storm Entertainment have inked an exclusive multiyear overall television deal with the tech giant to develop, produce and direct TV series “with a global perspective.” Lin, of course, had a long-standing TV deal at Sony.
In addition to rebooting the Fast and the Furious franchise, Lin helmed Star Trek: Beyond, the most recent installment in the modern Star Trek film series. His other film credits include The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, Fast and Furious 6 and his directorial debut Better Luck Tomorrow, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
Lin founded Perfect Storm Entertainment in 2012, and under it produced the CBS drama Scorpion, which ran for four seasons, as well as the currently airing series SWAT and Magnum P.I. and the upcoming Warrior for Cinemax. Perfect Storm Entertainment TV will be run by Andrew Schneider, who most recently oversaw the TV department for Free Association. Schneider was previously at Fox 21 Television Studios.
Apple first inked an overall deal that sources say is in the $10 million range for Bates Motel alum Kerry Ehrin to take the reins on the company’s Reese Witherspoon-Jennifer Aniston morning-news drama. It has since lured Oprah Winfrey to a content deal, snagged the rights to produce new Peanuts content and signed a pact with A24 to make movies for the streamer.
