Upton initially called out the fashion exec in a tweet, in which she wrote, “It’s disappointing that such an iconic women’s brand @Guess is still empowering Paul Marciano as their creative director #metoo.”
In the new interview, Upton recalled her first Guess lingerie modeling campaign in 2010, when she was 18 years old, and Marciano said he wanted to meet her. “As soon as I walked in with photographer Yu Tsai, Paul came straight up to me, forcibly grabbed my breasts and started feeling them — playing with them actually,” the model said. She claims Marciano then said he wanted to “make sure they’re real.”
Shortly thereafter, Upton says Marciano “continued to touch me in a very dominating and aggressive way, grabbing my thighs, my arms to pull me closer, my shoulders to pull me closer, my neck, my breasts, and smelling me.” He then tried to dismiss Tsai, but Upton texted him to stay, which he did. However, that did not stop Marciano’s “constant grabbing.”
Marciano then tried to escort Upton upstairs to her hotel room, but she declined and Tsai intervened before the situation escalated further. Upton claims the exec called her multiple times in her room, asking to enter. She denied the request. The next day, Upton learned she was fired from the shoot as someone had called her agency to say she “had gotten fat.”
The model did do other shoots with Guess after that, however, though Tsai was fired from her next shoot, for Guess Jeans, later in 2010. Upton claims Marciano’s advances on that set were even more aggressive, and when she again denied him she was again fired.
Upton had a final shoot with Guess in 2011, where Marciano was “outwardly rude and degrading the entire time,” calling her “disgusting.” He was eventually told to leave after calling her a “fat pig.”
In 2012, after Upton covered Sports Illustrated, Guess offered her $400,000 for a shoot, which she declined.
Upton says the experiences with Marciano “took a huge toll on my confidence and self-worth” and that she “wanted to quit modeling.”
Marciano has previously denied Upton’s claims, saying, “I have never touched Kate Upton. I have never been alone with Kate Upton. I have never acted inappropriately toward her.”
