It all started with a cherry chapstick on The Late Late Show with James Corden last night (April 4), when the host performed a Katy Perry-themed soap opera sketch starring himself, Claire Danes, Christine Baranski and Jack McBrayer.
The dramatic yet downright silly segment featured lyrics from the “Chained to the Rhythm” singer’s songs as dialogue for each character. In the opening scene Corden wakes up in a hotel room with the infamous chapstick (from “I Kissed a Girl”) is the same bed with Danes and McBrayer. Confused and dazed, Corden tries to recollect the night before while everyone recites Katy Perry lyrics that seemed most fitting at the moment. “Well that’s what you get for waking up in Vegas,” Danes explains.
Kissing a girl, one-night stands, getting hitched and having a menage a trois, Corden’s eventful night gets even more twisted when Baranski enters, finds out about the affair and admits to kissing a girl as well. The sketch ends with a Corden slap fest and a slew of other quotes from Perry.
For those who aren’t immediately able to identify Katy Perry songs — especially in soap opera form — the songs used in the segment were “I Kissed a Girl,” “Waking Up in Vegas,” “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Hot ‘n’ Cold,” “Chained to the Rhythm,” “Roar,” “Firework,” “Wide Awake” and “Last Friday Night.” Who knew such hits could be so dramatic?
Watch the drama unfold in the Katy Perry soap opera below.
