We have our first network jumper of the season.
NBC has handed out a comedy pilot order to Bright Futures, a single-camera comedy from Black-ish creator Kenya Barris that was originally developed at ABC.
The project revolves around a group of friends stumbling through the transition from the clueless, immature 20-somethings they are now to the successful professionals they’re destined to become.

Hale Rothstein, who spent two seasons on ABC’s Black–ish before moving to spinoff Grown-ish, will pen the script alongside Danny Segal and Isaac Schamis, with the latter two serving as writers on the Freeform comedy Grown-ish. Barris will executive produce Bright Futures alongside Rothstein. Segal and Schamis will co-exec produce.
The comedy hails from ABC Studio, where Barris‘ Khalabo Ink Society banner is under an overall deal. Bright Futures marks the first off-network sale for ABC Studios this pilot season. The Patrick Moran-fronted studio now has 18 total pilot orders for the season, with 17 of them at Disney-owned network counterpart ABC.

This is Barris‘ second order of the season and joins ABC’s untitled family comedy, which he is writing alongside Grown-ish‘s Julie Bean. That multicamera effort was originally picked up in a straight-to-series order with Alec Baldwin being eyed for the lead. The project has now reverted to a pilot while ABC searches for a new lead after Baldwin backed out of starring.
Barris serves as showrunner on Black-ish and Grown-ish, the latter of which scored an early 20-episode second-season renewal at the younger-skewing, Disney-owned network.
All told, this is NBC’s 15th overall pilot pickup and seventh comedy, three of which are single-camera vehicles.
