Kevin James is plotting his TV return.
The King of Queens alum has inked a two-year first-look deal with the studio behind the CBS comedy, the studio announced Wednesday. Additionally, the comedian currently starring in the sequel to Paul Blart: Mall Cop on the big screen and has renewed his first-look deal with studio Columbia Pictures that keeps him in the fold through 2017.
On the TV side, the SPT deal calls for James and his Hey Eddie Productions banner to produce television series, including a sitcom in which he would star.
The deal comes as James fielded numerous offers this pilot season as he continued to explore a return to the small screen. The pact reunites him with the studio behind King of Queens, which helped launch his career and where he launched his production company in 2007 with producing partner/manager Jeff Sussman. The funnyman previously had a two-year TV development deal with Lionsgate Television with an eye toward creating a new multicamera vehicle that also included a feature component. James had planned to star in one of Lionsgate’s 10/90 comedies — a la Charlie Sheen‘s Anger Management — but dropped out of the project.
“Kevin is an extraordinary talent, and we have a long successful relationship together with The King of Queens,” SPT president Steve Mosko said in a release announcing the news. “It’s great to have him back in the family and we’re very excited about his next big comedy series.”
James’ Hey Eddie banner has produced Zookeeper, Here Comes the Boom and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. In addition to James’ feature roles, he’s also held voice roles in Monster House as well as the Hotel Transylvania franchise.
