AMC’s The Killing has more storm to weather than excessive rain of its Seattle setting. Bucking the network’s trend of ratings growth, the murder mystery opened its sophomore season with significantly fewer viewers than last year’s contentious finale.
The two-hour opener brought in 1.8 million total viewers, earning a 1.4 rating among households for the network from 8 and 10 p.m. Sunday. Adding encore broadcasts, the series reached 2.5 million viewers in live-plus-two-hours.

Overall, the premiere is on par with much of its ratings showing from the first season but down from its successful series premiere and freshman finale.
The first-season finale of The Killing, which took flak for not offering a resolution of the Rosie Larsen murder mystery, brought in 2.2 million viewers. And that was down 19 percent from the series premiere of 2.7 million viewers (4.7 million including encores).
The Killing took a smaller hit in the targeted adults 25-54 demographic, dropping only 8 percent in core viewers from last season’s average and pulling in 847,000 viewers.
Recent premieres and finales of AMC’s Mad Men and The Walking Dead all set series records.
