Liz Meriwether is quickly becoming one of the busiest writer-producers in the current grab for pilots.
The New Girl creator and multihyphenate Lake Bell have gotten a pilot order for the family comedy Bless This Mess at Fox. Written and produced by both women, with Bell serving as the star and pilot director, the project will be shot in June for consideration outside the traditional pilot season.
From 20th Century Fox Television, the single-camera comedy follows a newlywed couple who give up their unfulfilling New York City lives for a move to Nebraska. They anticipate their relocation will bring a simpler life, but that does not go according to plan.
Bell’s recent TV credits include Childrens Hospital and Netflix’s two revivals of Wet Hot American Summer. Her directorial highlights include 2013 breakout feature In a World… and episodes of Childrens Hospital and Hulu’s Casual.

This is the third Meriwether project to get a pilot order this season. The writer, who will say goodbye to Fox’s New Girl with a seventh and final season this spring, partnered with J.J. Philbin on the ABC pilot Single Parents and Erin Foster on Fox’s Daddy Issues. Longtime Meriwether collaborator Katherine Pope, who is also attached to the other pilots, will serve as non-writing executive producer on Bless This Mess.
The series is Fox’s second off-cycle pilot order of the season.
Meriwether is repped by WME. Bell is with UTA.
