The return of Last Man Standing after a year away — and to a different network — was a strong one.
The Fox comedy delivered big ratings for its return Friday night, scoring a 1.8 rating among adults 18-49 along with 8.01 million viewers. Its final season on ABC in 2016-17 averaged a 1.2 rating and and 6.41 million viewers in the same-day ratings.
Most of the Last Man Standing audience stuck around for the new comedy The Cool Kids (1.5 in the 18-49 demo, 6.79 million viewers). The pair were the two top-rated shows of the night among adults 18-49 by a wide margin and probably benefited from heavy promotion during Fox’s Thursday Night Football telecast.
The season premiere of Hell’s Kitchen fell off a fair amount to 0.9, but was on par with its average last season.
The season premieres of CBS’ MacGyver (0.7 in the demo), Hawaii Five-0 (0.9) and Blue Bloods (0.9) all came down a little bit year over year: MacGyver and Five-0 each lost a tenth of a point, and Blue Bloods fell two tenths.
ABC’s newest Truth and Lies documentary about the Jonestown tragedy of the 1970s averaged a 0.6 rating, and 20/20 followed with a 0.7. Dateline also posted a 0.7 for NBC. The CW’s Masters of Illusion was on its average at 0.2.
Fox’s 1.3 rating in adults 18-49 for the night was almost double the 0.7 it averaged a year ago; CBS finished second at 0.8; ABC and NBC tied for third at 0.6; and The CW averaged 0.2.
