One day after Meryl Streep’s powerful Golden Globes speech and Donald Trump’s subsequent response, late-night hosts used their airtime to defend the Oscar-winning actress and criticize the president-elect.
Streep called out Trump’s behavior, saying, “When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose,” in her speech at the Globes on Sunday. This caused Trump to fire back, calling her a “Hillary lover” and an “overrated” actress. Stephen Colbert was not OK with that characterization.
“Of course, the President-elect Trump was too focused on fighting ISIS and creating jobs to pick a fight with a celebrity. Just kidding!” said Colbert in Monday’s Late Show monologue.
Colbert continued: “Trump tweeted, ‘Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood’ — wait a second —I’m sorry, what?!” Colbert interrupted himself. “What did you just say? Meryl Streep overrated? Have you seen Sophie’s Choice? Have you seen The French Lieutenant’s Woman? Have you seen that one with the dead people that she’s even funny in that one?”
“Look, Mr. Trump, you can refuse to release your taxes, you can call to ban an entire religion, you can play footsie with a dictator, but calling Meryl Streep overrated? No. Too far!”
On Conan, the host presented a “phone call” between President Barack Obama and Trump, in which the president-elect defended his Streep tweets: “She’s no Tara Reid!”
Seth Meyers took a “Closer Look” on Monday’s Late Night, addressing Trump’s tendency to tweet to redirect attention from serious issues.
“Overrated? She’s so good, people use her to compliment people in other professions,” said Meyers. “Like, ‘LeBron James is the Meryl Streep of basketball,’ or, ‘Donald Trump is the Meryl Streep of having thin skin.’ “
“Whether these tweets are calculated distractions or just the ramblings of an unhinged narcissist, it’s clear Trump would much rather talk about his feud with Meryl Streep than, say, the fact that intelligence officials believe Russia hacked the Democratic National Committee and the Trump campaign to help Trump win the election.”
On The Late Late Show, James Corden said he was actually excited for the award winner, adding that, ” ‘most overrated actress in Hollywood’ was literally the only award [Streep] hadn’t won yet.”
