Late-night hosts had a lot to say Thursday night about President Donald Trump’s ex-campaign chairman Paul Manafort’s fashion purchasing decisions.
Manafort drew ire during his trial this week, in which he faces charges of bank and tax fraud. Assistant U.S. Attorney Uzo Asonye told the courtroom that Manafort had opted to buy luxury goods in lieu of paying taxes. One such treasure is a “$15,000 jacket made from an ostrich,” something PETA is condemning and late-night hosts are latching on to. He reportedly spent a total of $1.3 million on clothes.
On The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert shared pictures of the various clothing items, poking fun at each one. Of one jacket, he said, “It would look great in a corner office or in a high school production of Guys and Dolls.”
“This $18,000 python skin jacket says, ‘Watch me unhinge my jaw and swallow a poodle whole,'” he joked of another. “Basically, his wardrobe looks like if a blind pimp got a hundred wishes.”
Over on The Daily Show, Trevor Noah joked, “What’s the point of wearing ostrich if you’re going to take off all of the feathers? That just seems like a waste. Like, if I’m wearing ostrich, I want to see that I’m wearing ostrich!”
He added, “It’s really interesting to see what’s happening here. It feels like the prosecution is trying to turn the jury against Manafort by showing them that he’s the kind of asshole who owns a $15,000 ostrich jacket.”
Noah, like Colbert, also called out the python jacket, saying, “Ok, first of all, if you’re trying not to seem evil, maybe don’t dress up like a snake?”
Later on NBC, Late Night host Seth Meyers imagined how Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders would react to the flashy wardrobe. “‘Two suits?’ yelled Bernie Sanders,” Meyers said. “‘My suit’s a timeshare!'” he said again in his Sanders impression.
