Late-night hosts used President Donald Trump’s Oval Office speech, which addressed the border wall and government shutdown and was carried by the nation’s biggest broadcast and cable networks, as comedic fodder on Tuesday night.
On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the host announced, “Trump’s address pre-empted our regularly scheduled CBS programming, FBI,” at which time a poster of the procedural drama FBI appeared on the screen. “Not the first time he’s interfered with an FBI investigation,” Colbert continued.
He went on to hypothesize, “I think Trump gave that speech because he misses being on primetime television.” Colbert then gave an impersonation of Trump as a participant on the entrepreneurial show Shark Tank, seeking billions of dollars to fund his border wall.
Over on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host joked, “This was Trump’s first address from the Oval Office. Up until now he’d been using it for Kardashian meet-and-greets, but tonight he got serious.”
“All the major networks covered his speech live and for good reason,” he continued. “It was historic. Rarely does a president of the United States interrupt primetime television to warn us about a completely made-up thing. He desperately wants us to be worried about this.”
Kimmel then pointed out the fundamental mistake that he believes Trump has made. “If you are Donald Trump — God forbid — and you make a dumb promise during your campaign like 200 different times, to build a wall, and your plan to fulfill that promise is to get people panicked enough to waste five billion dollars on it, going on TV and telling us there are ‘bad hombres’ sneaking over the border … that’s not going to do it.”
He put forward an idea. “If you really want to come up with a fake border crisis make it a scary border crisis. Go on TV and say don’t say there are illegal immigrants, say there is an army of chupacabras crawling in through Tijuana.”
On NBC, Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon also took time to speak about Trump’s address and the proposed wall, saying, “Things got weird when he said, ‘It can all be yours for five easy payments of one billion dollars.’ ”
The host also noted the networks the address was aired on, including Spanish-language network Telemundo. “When Trump saw footage of himself speaking Spanish he had himself deported,” Fallon quipped.
Late Night host Seth Meyers tweeted a question during Trump’s address, “Somebody please add ‘and live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!’ into the teleprompter.” He later added, “Is this Oval Office: SVU?” in reference to the show Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
During his show, Meyers briefly joked that Trump had never been in the Oval Office before the speech.
“It might have carried more weight if he hadn’t started with, ‘So this is the Oval Office, huh?'” said Meyers with a Trump impression as he looked around the room. ‘”Lot of history.”‘
“If you watched, you’ll know it was very bleak, it was dark and punctuated by more than a few sniffles,” he said. “To be honest, they could’ve aired a rerun of American Ninja Warrior and it would’ve been more nuanced, patriotic and reassuring than that.”
Corden said that Trump argued the wall is necessary because “the country is at a crossroads.” A clip from the speech followed of Trump stating that the U.S. is currently in crisis of the heart and soul. “And we have a president who’s completely ill-equipped to handle this crisis because he has neither.”
The host went on to call the whole speech “incredibly strange.” He then shared a clip of Trump stating that the border wall would pay for itself.
“Yeah, cause when he’s not using it, he’s gonna Airbnb it to Canada,” said Corden. “Is it a wall or someone on a nightmare Tinder date?”
Corden noted that Trump plans to travel to the southwest to visit the border between the U.S. and Mexico. “Trump wants to see if Santa left him that brand new wall he asked for,” he said. “On the trip, Melania will be accompanying Donald for support, as well as to get ideas for the wall she plans to build on her side of the bedroom.”
