On Tuesday, the late-night talk show hosts chimed in on the escalating tensions between the U.S. and North Korea, following Trump’s comments about unleashing “fire and fury” on the country.
“My God, Dennis Rodman, did you do nothing?” he asked. Colbert said it wasn’t fair that North Korea was threatening the U.S. when the Trump administration joined 15 countries in imposing sanctions against the Asian nation.
He jokingly said he was grateful for how Trump responded to North Korea’s aggression, when he “de-escalated the rhetoric and brought calm to our worried nation.” Just kidding, added the host, playing a clip of Trump threatening North Korea with “fire and fury.”
“Shut up,” said Colbert, addressing Trump through gritted teeth. “You’ll get us all killed, and I just started The Handmaid’s Tale.”
On ABC, Jimmy Kimmel said the North Korea news changed up the mood of his day. “Today started as a beautiful summer day here in L.A., and suddenly I was on Google searching ‘ways to survive a nuclear attack.'”
“Go back to golfing, before you kill all of us,” Kimmel told Trump, adding that the president’s vacation doesn’t seem to be relaxing him. “He’s making this crazy threat from a golf course,” he said.
In a different segment, Kimmel’s team hit the streets to ask Americans where North Korea is. The people they asked did not fare well, sometimes even pointing to Canada or Brazil.
“Want a hint? It’s above South Korea,” said the interviewer.
Conan O’Brien made light of Trump’s words in his monologue on TBS.
“Today President Trump warned that if North Korea does not stop escalating its nuclear program, quote, ‘They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen,’” said O’Brien. “Yeah, then Melania said, ‘Don’t worry, he says that to me every night and nothing ever happens.'”
On NBC’s Late Night, meanwhile, Seth Meyers joked that Trump’s words “oughta cool things down.”
“God forbid Trump ever be put in charge of a hostage situation,” joked Meyers. “Kill a hostage, you don’t have the balls,” he said in his Trump voice. “Plus, if you do I’ll kill everyone outside the bank.”
He listed off “nuclear missiles, the FBI director, the cast of the Apprentice.”
“This guy’s always gotta be firing something,” said Corden.
