Law & Order: SVU is getting a taste of the Windy City.
Former Chicago Justice star Philip Winchester has joined the cast for the upcoming 19th season of the Mariska Hargitay-led drama, reprising his character from the short-lived Chicago P.D. spinoff, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Winchester will make his SVU debut as prosecutor Peter Stone sometime midseason on the series. It is not yet known how many episodes he will appear in. It’s unclear how courtroom duties will be divided between Stone and Barba, played by Raul Esparza, who has been with the series since season 14. On Twitter Tuesday, exec producer Julie Martin promised “fireworks” between the two when Stone joins the District Attorney’s office.
The gig keeps the Strike Back alum in the Dick Wolf fold. In addition to headlining the 13-episode first and only season of Chicago Justice, Winchester appeared as Peter Stone on several episodes of Chicago P.D. Additionally, the recurring role reunites the actor with Chicago Justice showrunner Michael S. Chernuchin, who is taking over as showrunner on SVU for season 19.
Winchester is the second character from Justice to move to another series. Jon Seda’s Antonio Dawson will return to Chicago P.D. full-time for season five after his character transferred to the State’s Attorney’s office to work as an investigator for Stone. Seda had starred on P.D. for three and a half seasons prior, in addition to heavily recurring on season one of Chicago Fire.
Chicago Justice‘s cast also included Carl Weathers, Joelle Carter and Monica Barbaro.
Winchester played a particularly important character in the Dick Wolf canon. His character was the son of original Law & Order prosecutor Ben Stone (Michael Moriarty). Moriarty starred on Law & Order‘s first four seasons, during which time Chernuchin also worked on the NBC drama, before he was replaced by Sam Waterston.
Law & Order: SVU returns Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 9 p.m.
