Kerry Washington and Leslie Odom Jr. are headed for ABC.
The Hamilton Tony winner has been tapped to star in an ABC church comedy from executive producer Kerry Washington and inspired by real-life power couple and pastors Toure Roberts and Sarah Jakes-Roberts.
The untitled comedy, which is in development and landed at ABC with a sizable put-pilot commitment, revolves around Leslie and Hope, who are joint pastors at a young, hip, diverse church in Los Angeles. Through their services, online streams and books, they are experts at uniting people across different races, genders, orientations and opinions. But when it comes to uniting the people in their blended family, they are way out of their comfort zone and as a result, the teachers often find themselves the pupils.
Saladin Patterson (The Last O.G., The Big Bang Theory) will pen the script and exec produce the multicamera comedy. Scandal grad Washington will executive produce via her ABC Studios-based Simpson Street banner. Odom will also exec produce alongside Simpson Street’s Pilar Savone. The Roberts are on board as co-exec producers.
“Kerry Washington is one of the most formidable artists of my generation. We’ve been searching for the better part of two years to find an idea about which we both felt passionate enough to dedicate ourselves. I’ve gone to Toure’s church for over 15 years. He is a unique, contemporary and very necessary voice. We are thrilled that ABC is allowing us the opportunity to bring Toure and Sarah’s modern views to an even wider audience in what will be a joyful and hopeful 30 minutes every week,” Odom said.
Odom, who next voices a role in Apple’s two-season animated comedy Central Park, counts NBC’s Smash among his TV credits. He’s repped by CAA, Untitled Entertainment and Jackoway Austen.
Washington, meanwhile, established her Simpson Street banner in 2016. Its first project was HBO’s Emmy-nominated Confirmation. The company is developing features Goldie Vance, City of Saints & Thieves, The Mothers and The Perfect Mother. On the TV side, Washington next stars in and exec produces Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere alongside Reese Witherspoon and is prepping Hulu’s Old City Blues and multicam The Folks for CBS. On stage, Simpson Street is producing Broadway’s American Son, in which Washington stars. The play opens Nov. 4. She is repped by CAA, Washington Square Arts and Gretchen Rush.
“I am grateful to be working with such an all-star team of fearless and creative people. And I am excited that we have gathered together to tell a story that is inspiring, relatable, provocative and hilarious.”
Patterson is the showrunner on TBS’ Tracy Morgan and Tiffany Haddish comedy The Last O.G. His credits include Two and a Half Men, The Bernie Mac Show, Frasier and writing feature The Fighting Temptations. He’s repped by CAA and Jackoway Austen.
The Roberts are with Fox Rothschild.
