Greg Berlanti’s scripted slate is expanding once again.
The prolific producer is developing a psychological thriller for Lifetime, the cabler announced Friday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour.
Based on Caroline Kepnes‘ bestselling novel of the same name, You is described as a 21st century love story about an obsessive yet brilliant twentysomething who uses the hyper-connectivity of today’s technology to make the woman of his dreams fall for him.
Berlanti will write the adaptation with Sera Gamble (The Magicians), and the two will exec produce with Sarah Schechter, Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo. Berlanti Productions and Alloy Entertainment will produce in association with Warner Horizon Television.
If picked up to series, You would join a growing slate of scripted programming that includes UnREAL and the forthcoming doctor-assisted suicide drama Mary Kills People.
The network is also growing its unscripted roster as well. Lifetime announced Friday that it has picked up 10 episodes of the relationship game show My Partner Knows Best. From husband-and-wife team Jason Biggs and Jenny Mollen, each episode sees four couples compete each week in a series of challenges based on real-life relationship obstacles for a cash prize. Propagate will produce, working in association with Kanal D. Biggs, and Mollen will exec produce with Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, Irfan Sahin and Kevin Healey.
My Partner Knows Best joins the Queen Latifah and Jermaine Dupri’s music reality series The Pop Game. Joining The Rap Game, which launches season three, The Pop Game will see producer Timbaland as he works with five aspiring young artists all hoping to make it big in the music business. Guest artists include JoJo, Macy Gray, Nelly Furtado and Jordin Sparks, as well as Timbaland’s team of writers and producers, will assist the five through challenges designed to teach and test the skills needed to find success in the industry. Produced by Intuitive Entertainment, The Pop Game is exec produced by Kevin Dill, Mechelle Collins, showrunner Danny Salles, Queen Latifah and her partner, Shakim Compere, Dupri and Timbaland.
The project marks Timbaland’s return to TV following his sudden departure from Empire as supervisor music producer at the beginning of season three. He was subsequently replaced by producer Rodney Jerkins. My Pop Game premieres Feb. 21 on Lifetime.
Lifetime’s unscripted slate includes the Project Runway and Little Women franchises, Dance Moms, Bring It and Vivica’s Black Magic.
“Lifetime has an exciting 2017 ahead with big programming swings and initiatives that are dedicated to understanding the state of womanhood today, including what women want to watch and what they care about most,” said Lifetime executive vp and head of programming Liz Gateley. “As we continue to be a destination for all things female, we can’t wait to debut these projects that place the highest-caliber talent at the center of all we do.”
