AMC and Paul Giamatti are joining forces.
The cable network has given a straight-to-series order to Lodge 49, a drama executive produced by the Billions star, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The project is described as a modern fable set in Long Beach, Calif. At the center is Dud, a deadbeat but charming ex-surfer who joins a fraternal order hoping to reclaim the simple, happy lifestyle he lost when his father died. Through the Lodge and his newfound connection with the other members, Dud comes to discover the missing sense of purpose in his life and confront his deepest fears and greatest hopes.
Jim Gavin (Middle Men) wrote and created the series, and will exec produce with Giamatti, Dan Carey (Outsiders) and Peter Ocko (Pushing Daisies), the latter of whom will serve as showrunner. AMC Studios will produce the drama, which has received a 10-episode order.
“Lodge 49 is a show that defies easy categorization. It is, at once, a show about a loveable loser, the idea that life can be magical if you look at it from the right angle, what it means to be on the fringe and the importance of community. It’s also incredibly funny, poignant and truly entertaining” Joel Stillerman, AMC and SundanceTV’s president of original programming and development, said Tuesday in a statement. “This is a formidable creative team beginning with series creator Jim Gavin, showrunner Peter Ocko and the awesome producing team of Dan Carey and Paul Giamatti. Their passion and vision won the day, and we look forward to working with them to bring it to life.”
Added Giamatti: “We are beyond excited to be doing this unique show under the auspices of the fine folks at AMC.”
Lodge 49 is the second venture into TV producing for Giamatti, who also exec produces WGNA’s Outsiders. In front of the camera, the Oscar-nominated actor is preparing for the upcoming second season of the Showtime drama Billions, on which he stars opposite Damian Lewis.
AMC’s current original series slate includes The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, Better Call Saul, Halt and Catch Fire, Into the Badlands, Preacher and Humans. The network’s forthcoming projects include the limited series The Terror, which recently cast Mad Men alum Jared Harris in the lead role, and The Son, headlined by Pierce Brosnan.
