Freeform is adding to its comedy lineup for 2017.
The Disney-owned former ABC Family has handed out a series order to comedy Alone Together, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The project, produced by Lonely Island trio Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, stars Esther Povitsky and Benji Aflalo in a single-camera comedy about best friends who want nothing more than to be accepted by the vain and status-obsessed culture. Despite their sometimes contentious relationship, when push comes to shove, they’ve got each other’s back — as they have nobody else to hang out with.
In addition to starring in Alone Together, Povitsky and Aflalo also penned the script alongside Eben Russell (Girlboss), with the trio exec producing alongside Samberg, Taccone, Schaffer, Billy Rosenberg and Hunter Covington. Daniel Gray Longino (Lady Dynamite) directed the pilot, which was picked up in July.
“We are so proud of this series as it perfectly embodies the evolving Freeform brand and our dedication to programming for the 20-something viewer,” Freeform executive vp programming and development Karey Burke said Thursday in a statement. “Our audience will quickly fall in love as we did with real-life best friends Esther and Benji, who navigate a world of perfect 10s as self-proclaimed 6s.”
For Freeform, Alone Together arrives as the cabler is set to say farewell to flagship drama Pretty Little Liars as well as Switched at Birth in 2017. Its slate includes The Fosters (currently awaiting word on season five), Baby Daddy, Shadowhunters, Stitchers, Young & Hungry, Beyond, Famous in Love and Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, the latter of which may not air until 2018. On the pilot side, Freeform has comedy Brown Girls, which shoots in January, as well dramas The Deep and Issues remaining in contention. The latter has been heating up for a series pickup as well.
Alone Together comes as Freeform has struggled to find a new breakout hit under network president Tom Ascheim, who was behind the rebranding from ABC Family. Recent launches Dead of Summer, Recovery Road, Guilt and Kevin From Work were all canceled after one season.
