Love Is_ all right for OWN, which has renewed the drama ahead of its first-year finale.
The romantic drama from and inspired by prolific TV writer-directors Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil has been a solid performer for the cable network since its June 19 debut, regularly winning its time slot among women 25-54 and performing particularly well in the network’s targeted demo of African-American women.
“Mara and Salim have brought their heart and soul to this passion project working with our friends at Warner Horizon Scripted Television and we couldn’t be more thrilled to renew the show for a second season,” said OWN president Erik Logan. “This series is an important part of OWN’s scripted programming lineup and to see the ratings grow as the Akils’ love story unfolds each week is truly exciting.”
Love Is_, part of the network’s ongoing push for prestige drama, is the first OWN-set project for the Akils since they signed a massive deal with Warner Bros. in 2015. Brock Akil serves as showrunner, while partner (and husband) Salim Akil runs day-to-day on the duo’s other series — The CW’s Black Lightning, that network’s strongest freshman performer in some time.
The series hit a live-plus-three day ratings high July 17, with 1.4 million viewers tuning in. The season finale is set for Aug. 21, an episode Brock Akil will also direct.
Michele Weaver and Will Catlett star.
