When Marvel’s third Netflix series debuts this month, in addition to watching Luke Cage (Mike Colter) use his bulletproof powers to take out criminals, viewers will also get to see the inner-workings of a power struggle in Harlem. Who actually controls the city: Is it politician Mariah Dillard (Alfre Woodard), or is it her cousin, nightclub owner and organized crime kingpin Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes (Mahershala Ali)?
The Hollywood Reporter has the exclusive fist look at Mariah’s character poster, and the dark key art focuses on her political prowess. The strong and empowered woman hopes to use her position inside the law to make the Harlem community better, but will her ties to her cousin and his criminal activities drag her down?
Luke Cage follows Colter’s character, who was first introduced in Jessica Jones. After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern-day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city — forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.
Luke Cage is the third Marvel series to debut on Netflix after Daredevil and Jessica Jones, along with the upcoming series Iron Fist, all leading up to the Avengers-style team-up of the four main characters in The Defenders.
