The Magicians could be looking at a six-season run.
Based on a trilogy of books of the same by Lev Grossman, Syfy’s new fantasy drama about a college of magic in New York could go beyond its source material.
While promoting the series at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, the show’s executive producers revealed that they believe there’s ample material in the novels that would allow the small screen adaptation to stay on the air for several years to come.
“I think there’s enough material for six seasons,” said executive producer John McNamara (also an EP on NBC’s Aquarius) onstage Thursday. Added exec producer Michael London: “The collection of books has a lot of characters and a lot of storylines that can actually go off in infinite directions, so we’re actually excited about doing more that exists in the three books.”
The creative team behind the show starring Jason Ralph acknowledged that as they tell Grossman’s story, they’ll take a few detours along the way, sometimes exploring territory not found in the source material.
“The process in the writers room is sort of the Talmudic interpretation of Lev’s text. Sometimes we veer left; sometimes we find another way into the door,” explained executive producer Sera Gamble, who noted that season on will dip into the second book in the series. “But I think most of the big plot points that people love from the books, we’re getting to them.”
Gamble went on to add that the writers’ main goal has been to stay true to the spirit of the books. “There’s so much about the feeling and world building that Lev Grossman did that really compelled us,” she said, with London pointing out that the author has been intimately involved in the series as well: “We also work very closely with Lev. If we made any left turns or right turns, it’s always with his blessing and cooperation.”
The Magicians premieres with two episodes on January 25 on Syfy.
