In the wake of American Idol‘s end, Fox is adding a new musical entry to its unscripted slate.
The network has picked up an interactive musical game show based on the Shazam app from Mark Burnett, Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden announced Monday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.
Beat Shazam centers on individuals competing to identify a particular song, much the way the Shazam app helps users find out the title and artist behind a track. Those who are successful will then have to go up against the app for the top prize. Burnett will exec produce with Jeff Apploff (Don’t Forget the Lyrics), and Shazam Entertainment Limited will be a partner on the series. No premiere date has yet been announced.
Shazam was founded in 1999. There have been more than 25 billion Shazam queries, and the app currently has hundreds of millions of monthly active users globally.
Burnett also has the Fox reality dating show Coupled that launched earlier this summer in addition to his long-running series on CBS (Survivor) and NBC (The Voice, Celebrity Apprentice).
Since American Idol wrapped its 15-season run in April, Fox has been aggressive in building out its unscripted slate, with younger projects American Grit and Home Free joining more veteran programs like MasterChef and So You Think You Can Dance.
Beat Shazam is one of two new game shows coming to Fox, the other being an adaptation of the U.K. hit You’re Back in the Room, which will be hosted by Taye Diggs. Fox’s other upcoming unscripted series include the cooking show My Kitchen Rules and survival competition series Kicking and Screaming.
