Civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be the subject of season four of National Geographic’s Genius.
The anthology series will also become a Disney+ exclusive beginning with its fourth season. National Geographic Global TV Networks president Courteney Monroe made the announcement during Disney’s investor day presentation Thursday.
Nat Geo also unveiled two docuseries from Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan): Limitless With Chris Hemsworth will see the Thor star testing theories and practices to combat the aging process, and Welcome to Earth will feature Will Smith venturing to some of the “most extreme and exciting places” on the planet, including the lip of an active volcano and thousands of feet below the ocean.
Disney+ is also prepping a Swiss Family Robinson series from Ron Moore (Outlander, Battlestar Galactica) and Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, Disney+’s Willow).
The first two seasons of Genius profiled Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso, and the upcoming third season — the last to debut on Nat Geo’s linear channel — will focus on Aretha Franklin (played by Cynthia Erivo). The series comes from Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Television and Disney’s 20th TV.
Limitless and Welcome to Earth are both produced by Aronofsky and Nutopia, who collaborated on Nat Geo’s One Strange Rock. National Geographic will also debut a feature documentary about explorer Jacques Cousteau (titled Cousteau).
