Gilmore Girls grad Matt Czuchry is scrubbing in.
The actor has signed on to star in Fox’s medical-drama pilot The Resident, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The project follows an idealistic young doctor as he begins his first day under the supervision of a tough, brilliant senior resident who pulls the curtain back on all of the good and evil in modern-day medicine. Lives may be saved or lost, but expectations will always be shattered.
Czuchry will play Conrad Hawkins, a cocky third-year resident at Kings County Hospital. He joins a cast that also includes Manish Dayal and Bruce Greenwood.
Amy Holden Jones (Black Box), Hayley Schore (Code Black) and Roshan Sethi (Code Black) wrote the pilot. Jones will executive produce with Fuqua and Oly Obst, while Schore and Sethi are attached as co-exec producers. Phillip Noyce will direct. 20th Television will produce in association with 3 Arts Entertainment and Fuqua Films.
At Fox, Czuchry joins his Gilmore Girls co-star Lauren Graham, who is set to headline the comedy pilot Linda From HR.
The Resident comes fresh off of Netflix’s Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life revival, in which Czuchry appeared in all four installments.
“It always comes down to, when I read that script, if I’m going to be heartbroken if I don’t get that role,” Czuchry told THR in November when asked about his next role after Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. “So it’s really that gut feeling of reading the character and the material and then looking at who are the people associated with this, and if it is a TV show, what are the themes moving forward, how many episodes is it, where is it shot? A lot of things come into play.”
Before returning to Stars Hollow, Czuchry wrapped a seven-season run on The Good Wife. The actor, whose other credits include Friday Night Lights, is repped by Gersh and Thruline.
