Meghan McCain called for conservatives to “invoke the 25th Amendment” after the violent riots on Capitol Hill on Wednesday waged by a group of Trump supporters.
“This is one of the great national tragedies of my lifetime. This is one of America’s darkest days. I have been absolutely despondent watching this,” The View co-host said on the show on Thursday. “I think this is a time to take a very hard look at where we are as a country and to take a very hard look at where we are with President Trump. ”
McCain, who is a conservative and does not support Trump politically, added, “The bedrock of democracy and the bedrock of who we are as Americans is the peaceful transition of power, and he is clearly a president who has turned into a mad king. And at this point, I’m calling on Republicans and conservatives who have clout: We have to invoke the 25th Amendment. We cannot withstand this. Our country cannot go on like this. And we cannot possibly risk the idea that we could have more violence between now and President Biden getting elected and inaugurated.”
The violent riots that broke out on Thursday left four people dead, including one who was shot inside the Capitol, and over a dozen police officers injured. Thousands took part in the siege, which led to around 70 arrests from Wednesday through Thursday morning, NPR has reported.
Wednesday’s events have prompted some former Trump-supporting Republicans, including Sen. Tom Cotton, Sen. Richard Burr and Sen. Roy Blunt, to pin blame on the president. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called for invoking the 25th amendment to remove Trump from office on Thursday.
In her address on The View, McCain called the rioters “bastards” who were “using the American flag as symbols as they are attacking our own republic, the same flag that our veterans at Iwo Jima held after World War II.” She told them, “You are not patriots, you do not represent America. You are scum of the earth who are using and abusing and bastardizing all that I love and have grown up with for your own sick agenda.” McCain said the agenda had been “sent” by Trump, who did not disavow the riots, and called out Ivanka Trump for calling rioters “patriots” in a now-deleted tweet.
McCain concluded, “The final words I want to say on the show this morning, in the words of Oliver Cromwell, in the name of God, go, go. We cannot take this anymore.”
