Meghan Trainor is adding TV producer to her résumé.
The Grammy winner is set to executive produce and provide original music for a girl group drama at ABC. Titled Broken Record, the project landed at ABC with a sizable put-pilot commitment (and a large penalty attached) and with The Mark Gordon Company also attached to exec produce.
The drama revolves around The Candies, the superstar girl group who, on the nine-year anniversary of their breakup, are forced to reunite for an unexpected encore after a tragic event brings them back together. Broken Record tracks the journey of the four women of a certain age as they navigate changing tides in the music business and attempt to find their second acts — in life and in friendship.

Broken Record is based on an original idea by Danny Rose (Scorpion, Cougar Town) and Justin Sylvester, who will co-exec produce. Jenni Ross (Underemployed, features Hot Mess, The Baby Shower) will pen the script and exec produce alongside Rose and Drew Comins.
The project is the first broadcast sale for The Mark Gordon Company’s multiyear overall deal with Comins‘ new banner, Creative Engine Entertainment, where the independent company will develop TV projects for broadcast, cable and digital platforms.
Trainor, a multi-platinum-selling singer-songwriter whose singles include “All About That Bass,” “Lips Are Movin‘” and “Like I’m Gonna Lose You,” earned a Grammy as best new artist in 2014. She is repped by CAA, Full Stop Management and Myman Greenspan.
Ross is repped by Gersh and Haven Entertainment.
Broken Record brings Gordon back to ABC, where he formerly was under an overall deal with the network’s studio counterpart. The prolific producer counts Grey’s Anatomy, Quantico and Designated Survivor among his credits.
Broken Record also brings ABC back into the music drama space after the network shockingly canceled country music drama Nashville after a four-season run. (It was later revived at CMT.) Trainor’s involvement helps give the project an automatic fan base as the singer-songwriter has millions of fans on social media. The drama also arrives as Fox has continued to find success with hip-hop drama Empire, which also provides a second revenue stream for its original music.
