Televisa has become the latest network to sever ties with Donald Trump.
Mexico’s top broadcaster, which aired live transmissions of Trump’s annual Miss Universe Pageant, issued the following statement on Monday.
“For Grupo Televisa, it’s unacceptable any type of commercial relationship with the Miss Universe Pageant and with Trump’s businesses.”
Televisa’s U.S. partner, Univision, previously announced it was ending its relationship with Trump.
Trump has been heavily criticized for comments he made in a June 16 speech announcing his candidacy for president, in which he referred to Mexican immigrants as rapists.
“The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems…. When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best,” said Trump. “They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
Televisa said it vehemently rejects all forms of discrimination, racism and xenophobia.
“Mr. Trump has showed no understanding nor respect for Mexican immigrants, and he has offended all Mexican people,” the broadcaster said.
Earlier on Monday, NBC said it was ending its business relationship with Trump over his “recent derogatory statements.”
NBC will no longer air the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants, and Trump will no longer participate in The Celebrity Apprentice.
Also on Monday, Reuters reported that Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, the world’s second-richest man, has also cut ties with Trump. Slim’s Ora TV, a joint production venture with Larry King, was developing a TV project with Trump but has canceled it.
Slim spokesman Arturo Elias was quoted as saying, “His statement was totally out of line…working with someone so closed-minded was not going to work.”
