Michael Bloomberg confirmed Monday he is contemplating joining the 2016 presidential race.
The billionaire and former New York City mayor told the Financial Times that he was examining “all the options” because he was displeased with the current candidates and that the American people deserve “a lot better.”
“I find the level of discourse and discussion distressingly banal and an outrage and an insult to the voters,” the 73-year-old reportedly said.
Bloomberg, who was elected to his third term as mayor as an independent, told the Times his name would have to start appearing on ballots across the country as early as the beginning of next month.
“I’m listening to what candidates are saying and what the primary voters appear to be doing,” he said, the Times reported.
Bloomberg’s comments are on the heels of a New York Times article published in January that stated he instructed advisors to draft a plan for a possible White House run.
At that time, the former mayor said he would be willing to spend $1 billion of his own fortune on the campaign, according to the New York Times.
Around that time, fellow billionaire media head Rupert Murdoch weighed in on the possible Bloomberg bid.
This is Bloomberg’s last chance. You never know until your hat is in the ring! Events change everything, especially during elections.
