Miles Teller is doing TV.
The actor, who starred in the acclaimed indie pic Whiplash, as well as Fantastic Four and the Divergent movie series, will topline Amazon’s upcoming original drama series Too Old to Die Young, a crime-thriller project from Drive filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn that explores a hidden world of assassins.
Teller will play the lead role of Martin, a police officer entangled in the criminal underbelly of Los Angeles. Refn wrote the project with Ed Brubaker, the prolific comic author (Captain America, The Fade In), with Refn on board to direct the entire series.
Die Young tells of a grieving police officer who, along with the man who shot his partner, finds himself in an underworld filled with working-class hit men, Yakuza soldiers, cartel assassins sent from Mexico, Russian mafia captains and gangs of teen killers. Amazon, which made the casting announcement on Monday, says the series will follow “killers’ existential journeys in becoming samurai.”
Teller last year starred with Jonah Hill in War Dogs and makes up part of the upcoming muscular ensemble of Granite Mountain, a true-life firefighting drama directed by Joseph Kosinski. The actor also stars in Thank You for Your Service, a drama about combat vets dealing with PTSD, which is set for release on Oct. 27.
Other high-profile series in the works at Amazon include David O. Russell’s mafia drama starring Julianne Moore and Robert De Niro, Matthew Weiner’s Mad Men follow-up The Romanoffs and Barry Jenkins’ Underground Railroad limited series.
Teller is repped by CAA and Stone Genow.
