Miley Cyrus is putting a feminist touch on an old holiday classic.
Just before performing “Santa Baby” on Thursday’s Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Cyrus meets up with Fallon to point out some of the lyrics to the song she had questions about. “Am I saying that I’m going to hook up with Santa if he buys me all this stuff?”
So she changes a few of the lyrics to match up with her own viewpoint, singing: “Santa baby, I don’t need any fancy jewelry. Not me. I’ve got something else in mind.”
“Don’t want diamonds, cash or stocks. Nothing that comes in a box. No more fluff, I’ve had enough. And I can buy my own damn stuff.”
While she continues to update the lyrics, Mark Ronson comes in as a backup dancer with Fallon as Cyrus drops her biggest wish list item: “Listen Santa to what I say, a girl’s best friend is… equal pay.”
“Santa baby, I’d love to know my ass won’t get grabbed at work, by some ignorant jerk,” she continues, while Fallon and Ronson accidentally put the ornaments in an unfortunate configuration. “Tell the dirtbag to put away the chimney tonight.”
The bit airs on Thursday’s Tonight Show, which also features guests Felicity Jones, Jimmy Carr and musical guest Bebe Rexha.
In a Tonight Show sketch last November, Jessica Chastain addressed similar feminist issues in a sketch about sexist auditions and again with gender-swapped Hollywood scenes. And keeping with the holiday season, earlier this week the late-night host sang recent hits with holiday lyrics when Lin-Manuel Miranda stopped by.
