Minnie Driver shared that she celebrated her one-year anniversary of becoming a United States citizen by driving her elderly neighbors to the voting polls during November’s midterm elections.
The English-born actress told guest host Ellie Kemper about the patriotic celebration when she visited The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Friday.
“I voted for the first time. It’s my constitutional right,” she said about the recent midterm elections.
Driver explained that she has met many of her elderly neighbors while walking her dog in the morning. “We were all very excited about voting, and I was talking to them and saying, ‘So are you going to go down to the poll?’ It’s down the street in someone’s garage. And she’s like, ‘Oh no, I can’t get there because I don’t have a car,'” she said.
The actress said that she told her neighbor that Uber and Lyft were offering half-off rides for anyone going to the polls, though the neighbor said that she doesn’t “do technology.”
“I was like, ‘Well, would you like me to walk with you?’ ‘I don’t walk.’ I was like, ‘You’re walking right now,'” she recalled. “Anyway, I ended up being the carpool for some neighbors. She was like, ‘Well, if I’m going Maureen’s gotta come, too.'”
By the end of the day, Driver had made four trips to the polls with her neighbors.
She then reflected on the test she had to take to become a legal citizen. “They give you 100 questions, right? And you don’t know what 10 they’re going to ask you, so I just learned it like a script. I just learned the whole thing,” she said. “And basically anyone that came through my door, if you were American, I was like, ‘You don’t get dinner until you answer this question.'”
“I was very, very sincere. I learned all of them,” she said about the question prompts.
She said the test was “dead serious and quite scary.” The proctor asked questions she was prepared for, but also some “weird” questions. “Such as, ‘So now, have you ever been a prostitute?’ I was like, ‘Well, you know. I’m an actress. Kind of hooker adjacent,'” she joked.
“My question to this dude before I answered, I was like, ‘Well, do you ask the men this question?’ And he was like, ‘Absolutely,'” she said. “I didn’t ask a follow-up question, which was, ‘And what percentage of them said yes?'”
