France’s CanalPlus has taken a duo of crime dramas for its free-to-air channel, the newly relaunched C8.
Patrick Harbinson’s Fearless premiered at MIPTV’s Drama Screenings on Sunday night. The six-episode legal thriller follows a local legal defense attorney who investigates the killing of a young girl and faces off against the police. It hails from Mammoth Screen, the production team behind hits Poldark and Victoria.
CanalPlus also grabbed police thriller Bancroft, which follows a female detective on a cold case and is currently in production. The four-episode series comes from Home Fires exec producer Francis Hopkinson.
“We are delighted to have partnered with CanalPlus in France on these two incredible dramas, and look forward to them launching on the C8 free-to-air channel. It is testament to the quality of the writing, and both the on and off-screen talent of these productions, that C8 has committed to invest in both projects so early,” said ITV executive vp Dan Gopal.
Under the direction of parent company Vivendi head Vincent Bollore, CanalPlus rebranded its free-to-air channel as C8 in September 2016 as part of a focus on its broadcast properties as its flagship pay-TV channel CanalPlus hemorrhages subscribers.
C8 is the fourth-ranked French channel with an average share of 4.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016.
