TBS has renewed its comedy Miracle Workers, but it’s doing so without creator Simon Rich, who is stepping away from the series.
The WarnerMedia cable network has picked up a third season of the anthology series, which stars Daniel Radcliffe, Steve Buscemi, Geraldine Viswanathan and Karan Soni. Dan Mirk and Robert Padnick, who worked on the first two seasons of the show, have been upped to showrunners for the coming season.
Season three of the anthology series will take place in the American West circa 1844, following a group of travelers on the Oregon Trail.
“Miracle Workers is a perfect example of the fun, escapist humor that we take pride in delivering to our viewers,” said Sam Linsky and Adrienne O’Riain, co-heads of scripted original programming for TBS, TNT and TruTV. “We can’t wait to see how this incredibly dynamic cast and talented group of storytellers hilariously rewrite 19th century history.”
The renewal, and Rich’s departure, come more than six months after the second season, subtitled Dark Ages, wrapped on TBS in March. Miracle Workers‘ audience held up fairly well compared to its first season, with linear viewership slipping only slightly. TBS says the show ranks among the top five cable comedies of 2020 so far.
Mirk was a co-executive producer in season two, and Padnick was a consulting producer. Both previously worked with Rich on FXX’s Man Seeking Woman. Mirk is a veteran of The Onion and Hulu’s Future Man; Padnick’s credits also include The Office and Great News.
“Getting to tell an entirely new story with this ludicrously talented cast each season is a dream come true,” said Mirk and Padnick. “We could not be happier that TBS has given us the reins on this unique and special show.”
Lorne Michaels, Andrew Singer and Katy Jenson of Broadway Video executive produce the series with Radcliffe, Buscemi, Mirk and Padnick.
Miracle Workers is part of an original scripted lineup on TBS that includes The Last O.G. — which is also changing showrunners for its fourth season — American Dad and the upcoming Chad and Obliterated.
