While Mitt Romney takes a beating in the media over a leaked recording of the Republican presidential nominee saying, among other things, that he’d have a better shot of winning the Oval Office had he been born to “Mexican parents,” he seems to have a ratings edge over President Obama with Hispanic-American viewers.
Univision aired Meet the Candidate interviews with Romney and Obama — on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively — and slightly more viewers opted for Romney. The challenger’s one-hour special pulled in 2.8 million viewers at 10 p.m., topping Obama’s telecast by 100,000.
Romney saw a similar advantage with adults 18-49. His special pulled in 1.4 million over Obama’s 1.3 million. And for young adults in many markets, there was an increase over viewership of Romney’s Republican National Convenion speech. Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix and San Francisco more than doubled Univision’s 18-49 returns seen on the last night of the RNC.
An opportunity for both candidates to speak on issues pertinent to Hispanic Americans, both interviews were conducted by Univision’s Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas. The events, the first of their kind, were organized after the Commission on Presidential Debates denied Univision’s request to air a fourth debate.
