USA’s upcoming drama Mr. Robot definitely is trying to make a statement with a new set of ads making the rounds online.
Four new pieces of key art for the series declare: “F— Society,” “F— Social Media,” “F— Wall St.” and “F— the System.” The curse word is not spelled out in any ads — it’s blocked by star Rami Malek — and the new art is only expected to run online. However, it’s still a big change of pace for the network once known for its “blue skies” brand.
In addition to being eye-catching, the ads also serve as a spot-on introduction to the series, which centers on an anti-social young programmer named Elliot (Malek) who can connect to people only by hacking them. He is recruited to join an underground hacker organization that’s determined to bring down corporate America by a mysterious anarchist named Mr. Robot (Christian Slater).
The ads follow such recent controversial posters as Fox’s poster for first-year drama Backstrom, which called Rainn Wilson‘s character a “Brilliant Detective. Total Dick.” FX’s sci-fi series The Strain caused a different kind of stir when posters went up featuring an extremely graphic photo of a worm coming out of a person’s eyeball. FX later altered the billboards.
Mr. Robot premieres Wednesday, June 24, at 10 p.m. on USA.
