December is bringing some extra good cheer for Nashville fans.
CMT announced Thursday that it will sneak the first hour of the two-hour season five premiere on Dec. 15 at 9 p.m.
On Thursday, the Viacom-owned cable channel also unveiled the first season five trailer. The new footage, which also catches fans up with where things left off at the end of season four, most notably with Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) on her private plane as alarms sound off in the background and the turbulence hits high.
Those aren’t only the bumps in the road ahead. The Nashville trailer also teases some marital problems for (relative) newlyweds Rayna (Connie Britton) and Deacon (Charles Esten) when Rayna decides she wants to write their life story.
“This last year has been one of the worst damn years of my life,” he retorts.
Rayna soon grows frustrated with him too. “I’m not going to fall into this trap with you,” she says through tears.
Another couple facing tough times? Scarlett (Clare Bowen) and Gunnar (Sam Palladio) when Rayna pushes them to release their next single and build on their growing momentum as a duo. “Singing that song makes me to slap the living hell out of you,” Scarlett yells.
The official season five description released Thursday points to some interesting plot developments as well: “The season begins with Rayna and Deacon facing a new normal with Maddie now back home and Highway 65 struggling financially. The shocking news about Juliette creates a wave of emotions throughout Nashville and sets Rayna off on a journey of discovery.”
The hourlong special preview will be the first new episode of the country music drama to air on CMT since the cabler partnered with Hulu to bring the series back from cancelation last June. (ABC unexpectedly canceled Nashville after four seasons the month prior.) As part of the deal, the first of the two-hour premiere will be available for streaming the next day on Hulu.
The upcoming fifth season also marks Nashville‘s first under the direction of new showrunners Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick (My So-Called Life, thirtysomething). They exec produce with Steve Buchanan, Callie Khouri and CMT’s Jayson Dinsmore and Morgan Selzer. The drama hails from Lionsgate, ABC Studios and Opry Entertainment.
