The New Normal has been canceled after one season at NBC.
The semi-autobiographical comedy from Glee‘s Ryan Murphy and Ali Adler marked Murphy’s first half-hour comedy and aired as part of NBC’s Tuesday comedy block. Boosted by The Voice, the Justin Bartha-Andrew Rannells starrer about a gay couple starting a family earned a full-season order in October despite early protests from conservative watchdog groups.

The series, like the rest of its Tuesday block, suffered without The Voice, notching a string of lows before the singing competition returned to revitalize the lineup. While its April season finale was penned to serve as a potential series finale, producers said that a second se ason would have featured the newly married couple raising their newborn son.
The 20th Television entry marks Murphy’s first show to not move beyond its freshman run. Meanwhile, Fox handed out a two-season renewal to Glee, FX has ordered a third season of anthology American Horror Story and Oxygen has yet to make a formal decision on its reality competition effort The Glee Project. In the meantime, the prolific showrunner is keeping busy readying an adaptationof The Normal Heart at HBO as well as a sexuality drama pilotOpen, in addition to feature fare.
With the cancellation, NBC has axed nearly its entire freshman class save for drama Hannibal and Save Me, which will debut in the summer.
