NBC’s big comedy push continues.
Ahead of its Monday morning upfront presentation to ad buyers, the network has picked up its seventh comedy for 2012-13, ordering six episodes of a single-camera effort starring Dane Cook.
Next Caller, which hails from Lionsgate Television and Universal Television, is described as a gender comedy that revolves around a brash alpha-male DJ (Cook) and his feminist co-host (Collette Wolfe) set in the office of a satellite radio station. Weeds‘ Stephen Falk writes and exec produces, and Marc Buckland directed the pilot. Next Caller will be Cook’s series television debut.
The pickup marks the network’s sixth single-camera comedy, following series orders to Matthew Perry‘s Go On, Anne Heche’s Save Me, Ryan Murphy‘s The New Normal, Josh Gad‘s 1600 Penn and Justin Kirk‘s Animal Practice. NBC’s lone multicamera comedy series order is Guys With Kids, which counts Jimmy Fallon among its executive producers.
