The Munsters is getting the reboot treatment for a second time.
Seth Meyers and Odd Mom Out star and creator Jill Kargman are developing a new take on the beloved sitcom, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Inspired by the original series, the comedy centers on an offbeat family determined to stay true to themselves as they struggle to fit in in hipster Brooklyn.
Kargman is writing the script and will executive produce with Meyers and his producing partner Mike Shoemaker. Their Sethmaker Shoemeyers Productions banner will produce with Universal TV.
Universal TV also produced the original series, which ran on CBS from 1964-1966 and produced 70 episodes. Despite its relatively short run, the series amassed a following in syndication.
NBC previously tried to reboot The Munsters with Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies) in 2012. The project, titled Mockingbird Lane, produced a pricey pilot directed by X-Men helmer Bryan Singer. In a rare move by the network, NBC ran the pilot as a Halloween special in October of that year, but the project was ultimately not picked up to series.
Unlike the original Munsters and Kargman’s new take, Fuller’s version was seen as a darker and edgier hourlong drama. Jerry O’Connell, Portia de Rossi and Eddie Izzard led the cast.
This marks the latest scripted series project for Meyers and Shoemaker, who also exec produce NBC’s midseason single-camera comedy A.P. Bio starring Glenn Howerton and Patton Oswalt. Both have long called NBC home, with the two working on Saturday Night Live. Shoemaker currently serves as showrunner on Late Night With Seth Meyers, which recently nabbed its first Emmy nomination for outstanding writing on a variety series. Meyers’ current NBC contract runs through 2021.
Kargman has been in the Universal fold for several years, creating, executive producing and starring in the single-camera comedy Odd Mom Out, which is produced by sister studio Universal Cable Productions for NBCUniversal cable network Bravo. The show, which marked Bravo’s first scripted comedy series, recently kicked off its third season.
The Munsters marks one of the first development projects of the new season as NBC, and its competitors, prepare to unveil their latest fall offerings.
Reboots and revivals continue to be a popular trend as television executives look for familiar IP to help break through the Peak TV clutter. However, it’s been a mixed bag at NBC, which canceled Heroes Reborn after one low-rated season and also scrapped a planned revival of Coach. However, the network is clearly feeling confident about its Will & Grace revival. NBC ordered four more episodes for the upcoming season — bringing the total episode count to 16 — and also ordered a second season. Like The Munsters, Will & Grace hails in-house from Universal TV.
NBC’s broadcast rivals have also found success with reboots, such as CBS with Hawaii Five-0, and Fox with The X-Files, and ABC is hoping the same will be true with the upcoming returns of American Idol and Roseanne.
