NBC is putting a twist on The Biggest Loser.
The network has given a cast-contingent series order to The Weight for Love, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The series is based on an original format, with each hourlong episode centering on overweight couples who commit to separate for a long period of time in order to regain their health. They then reunite in an emotional reveal.
Weight for Love hails from 5×5 Media and Warner Horizon Television. 5×5’s Rick Ringbakk (The Amazing Race, Fashion Star) and Craig Armstrong (King of the Nerds, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition) will executive produce the series.
NBC will host four casting calls for the series, and if the network is pleased with the results, will pick up Weight for Love to series. (Details on the casting calls are below.)
The project comes as NBC’s The Biggest Loser returns for its 16th season this month. The weight-loss competition series remains a key piece of the network’s unscripted slate, with NBC looking to the series to anchor its former “Must-See TV” Thursday night lineup at 8 p.m. after abandoning its traditional four-comedy block.
Weight for Love marks NBC’s second cast-contingent unscripted series order this week. The network on Tuesday also picked up an adaptation of Korean format Grandpas Over Flowers called Better Late Than Never, a celebrity adventure-reality hybrid show from Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.
