Neil Patrick Harris may play the ultimate bachelor on How I Met Your Mother, but he revealed a decidedly domestic side in an interview with Oprah Winfrey set to air Sunday.
The comedian, who has 19-month-old twins with partner David Burtka, invited Winfrey to his family’s home, where she cooed over the toddlers and asked the men about fatherhood.

“We really had thought it through, financially, emotionally, relationship-wise,” Harris said of having children. “We didn’t just accidentally get pregnant and realize all of a sudden we need to make this work. These kids come into our world with nothing but love.”
The couple discussed using an egg donor and a surrogate mother, saying they did extensive reading on the medical histories of both women. Of the two eggs that produced embryos, one had been fertilized by each of the men. Harris said they plan on eventually explaining the science behind it to their children.
“The way they were brought into this world was very unique and weirdly scientific,” Harris said. “The technology involved in it I think was remarkable.”

When Winfrey clarified that the surrogate mother of the twins was not the same woman who donated the eggs, Burtka showed that his TV star partner isn’t the only one in the family with comedic timing, quipping, “She was more like the oven.”
The full interview is scheduled to air Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on OWN’s Oprah’s Next Chapter.
