Netflix is continuing its march worldwide, unveiling plans on Tuesday to expand to Australia and New Zealand. The streaming service says that it will expand to those countries in March 2015. Pricing details were not revealed.
The move follows Netflix’s starting to fan out across Europe this past September, including into France and Germany. Launching in Australia and New Zealand also signals Netflix is stepping up the pace of its international expansion.
The video-streaming giant, which launched in 2007, first expanded into Canada in 2010, and a year later moved into Latin America.
That was followed by forays into the U.K., Ireland and Scandinavia in 2012 and the Netherlands in 2013.
Now, after marching across Europe, Netflix is betting Aussie and Kiwi Internet users will subscribe for a combination of Hollywood, foreign and local movies and TV shows.
Australia and New Zealand are also ripe for Netflix, as they are English-speaking markets filled with high-speed Internet users with smart TVs and provide a doorstep to neighboring Asian markets.
Netflix will roll out original series like Marco Polo, BoJack Horseman and kids titles like DreamWorks Animation’s All Hail King Julien to initially target the Australian and New Zealand markets.
Other Netflix content for the Aussie and Kiwi markets includes the family thriller Bloodline, starring Ben Mendelsohn and Kyle Chandler, Marvel’s Daredevil, featuring Charlie Cox and Rosario Dawson, and Sense8, a thriller series from the Matrix trilogy and Babylon 5 creators.
