Netflix has set its sights on another territory for its global ambitions: Cuba.
Consumers in the country will be available to subscribe to the service for $7.99 beginning on Monday, the streaming media company announced Feb. 9.
“We are delighted to finally be able to offer Netflix to the people of Cuba, connecting them with stories they will love from all over the world,” read a statement from Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. “Cuba has great filmmakers and a robust arts culture and one day we hope to be able to bring their work to our global audience of over 57 million members.”
Netflix had announced plans to expand to Latin American countries in July 2011 and subsequently said it launched the service in 43 countries beginning in September of that year. The company ended last year with 57.4 million subscribers worldwide.
The company has embarked on an ambitious worldwide expansion in the past several years. The service arrived in multiple European nations last year, unveiled a planned launch in Australia and New Zealand in March and set sights on debuting in Japan this fall.
