Netflix has ordered its first original docuseries.
From acclaimed Jiro Dreams of Sushi filmmaker David Gelb, Chef’s Table features the most well-known international chefs and gives viewers the opportunity to go inside the lives and kitchens of these talents. The streaming service has ordered six episodes for a 2015 launch in all territories where Netflix is available.
“We want to continue to support the best in nonfiction storytelling. While some stories are best told as feature-length films, others, like Chef’s Table, greatly benefit from being able to communicate their story in a multiepisodic fashion. We’re fortunate to have the flexibility to match the story with the best format,” said Lisa Nishimura, vp original documentary and comedy at Netflix.

Netflix continues to make a big push for global subscribers, recently ordering its first French series, Marseilles. Other upcoming projects include Narcos, a drama based on Pablo Escobar‘s Medellin Cartel, and an untitled Spanish-language comedy from director Gaz Alazraki. It is also expanding into unscripted fare with a rich deal with Chelsea Handler for a new late-night talk show and comedy specials slated for a 2016 debut. Chef’s Table‘s pickup comes one week after Netflix ordered the third and final season of the under-the-radar horror thriller Hemlock Grove.
