Netflix announced Wednesday that it plans to launch in South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan in early 2016 as the online video streaming giant continues its global expansion.
By the end of 2016, Netflix has said it plans to reach 200 countries, including China, where it said it was “continuing to explore options.”
“The combination of increasing Internet speeds and ubiquity of connected devices provides consumers with the anytime, anywhere ability to enjoy their favorite TV shows and movies on the Netflix service,” said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. “These four markets well represent those trends.”
The news comes hot on the heels of the company’s debut in Japan last week, its first major launch in the diverse but fast-growing markets of Asia.
Netflix said its streaming service will be available in the four additional Asian markets on smart TVs, tablets, smartphones, computers and various Internet-capable game consoles and set-top boxes.
The company will launch in South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan with a selection of its popular English-language TV shows, movies and kid-friendly programming, most of which will be subtitled. Details on original programming possibilities and pricing will be announced at a later date, Netflix said.
