Netflix has grabbed the international rights beyond North America to ABC’s Designated Survivor, which stars Kiefer Sutherland, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The worldwide streaming-rights deal inked with Entertainment One follows the drama debuting in the U.S. and Canadian markets on Wednesday at 10 p.m. International rights to the presidential drama is handled by eOne, who started shopping Designated Survivor at the Los Angeles screenings.
The series from eOne’s The Mark Gordon Company and ABC Studios was created by David Guggenheim, who executive produces with Simon Kinberg, Sutherland, Mark Gordon, Nick Pepper, Suzan Bymel and Aditya Sood. Jon Feldman is the showrunner.
The conspiracy thriller follows a lower-level U.S. cabinet member, Tom Kirkman (Sutherland), who is suddenly named U.S. president after a catastrophic attack during the State of the Union kills everyone above him in the presidential line of succession. Sutherland will be at MIPCOM next month to promote the show and do a master class keynote speech.
