Netflix has tapped Mexican filmmaker Manolo Caro to make a dark Spanish-language comedy series about a dysfunctional Mexican family running a flower business. The streaming service has ordered 13 half-hour episodes, which will be filmed in Mexico in 4K early next year.
The untitled series revolves around a flower shop owner who learns his longtime mistress has passed away, so he brings their children into the household alongside his wife and children.
Writer-director Caro’s previous works have resonated well with Mexican audiences. His recent features include the comedy La Vida Inmoral de la Pareja Ideal (Tales of an Immoral Couple), Elvira, Te Daria Mi Vida Pero la Estoy Usando (Elvira, I’d Give You My life but I’m Using It) and Amor de Mis Amores (Love of My Loves).
“Manolo is the only filmmaker in Mexico to have been part of the top 10 highest grossing movies over the last three consecutive years,” said Erik Barmack, Netflix’s vp international originals.
Producers on the series are Rafael Ley, who worked with Caro on two of his previous features, and Stacy Perskie (Mozart in the Jungle).
As Netflix ramps up production in Latin America, it is seeking filmmakers with proved box-office success. The streaming service has produced two seasons of the soccer dramedy Club de Cuervos, from Gaz Alazraki, helmer of the smash hit We Are the Nobles; and Narcos, produced by Elite Squad filmmaker Jose Padilha.
Other series from the region include the upcoming release of Ingobernable, starring actress Kate del Castillo as Mexico’s first lady, and 3%, a thriller from Oscar-nominated City of God cinematographer Cesar Charlone.
Caro’s original series will be available across all 190 Netflix territories.
