When Netflix began streaming multi BAFTA-winning series Happy Valley, the gritty British drama proved a hit in the U.S. With the third season not due to land until 2018, the SVOD giant has ordered a new series direct from its producers.
Safe, a joint commission by Netflix and France’s Canal+ Group, is an eight-episode, one-hour drama from best-selling writer Harlan Coben and Manchester-based banner Red Productions. With a screenplay by BAFTA and Emmy winner writer Danny Brocklehurst (Ordinary Lies, Shameless) and set to star Michael C. Hall (Dexter, Six Feet Under) and Amanda Abbington (Sherlock), the series sees a widow who’s raising two teenage girls in a picturesque gated community become embroiled overnight in mystery involving murder, a disappearance and buried secrets.
The drama, which began shooting Tuesday, will stream globally on Netflix outside of France, where it will air on C8. Studiocanal, which owns a majority stake in Red Productions, has distribution rights.
Safe is executive produced by Hall, Coben, Brocklehurst, Nicola Shindler and Red’s head of development Richard Fee.
