Netflix has ordered adult animated series Inside Job from showrunner and exec producer Shion Takeuchi (Gravity Falls), her first project under her multiyear overall deal with Netflix.
The 20-episode series is described as a “workplace comedy set in the shadow government, where every conspiracy theory — from the Illuminati to Reptoids — is true, and one woman struggles to keep the chaos under wraps.” Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch, who also has a lucrative deal with the streaming giant, is co-exec producer.
After graduating from Cal Arts, Takeuchi was recruited by Pixar to work in the story department, where her credits included 2013’s Monsters University and 2015’s Inside Out. She then focused on writing, working on animated series including Gravity Falls — for which she shared an Annie Award writing nomination — as well as The Regular Show, Lost in Oz and Netflix’s own Disenchantment.
Inside Job will be produced at Netflix Animation in Hollywood, which opened in 2018 and currently houses roughly a dozen projects, including limited series Maya and the Three, from Book of Life helmer Jorge Gutierrez; feature Jacob and the Sea Beast, from Big Hero Six director Chris Williams; children’s series Trash Truck, from creator/showrunner Max Keane; and interactive kids series Battle Kitty.
The streaming giant also has animated productions in the works at additional studios, including its first original animated feature, Klaus, from Despicable Me creator Sergio Pablos and his Madrid-based The Spa Studios, which opens at the end of the year.
Netflix’s bullish growth in animation also includes adult animation titles such as BoJack Horseman, Big Mouth, Disenchantment, F Is for Family, and Paradise PD, as well as upcoming series Tuca & Bertie, Hoops, and Q-Force. It also includes David Fincher and Tim Miller’s recently released anthology series Love, Death & Robots. The streaming giant opened its in-house unit in a bid to bridge the physical animation process with the creative while also eliminating the costly process of outsourcing it.
Takeuchi is repped by Verve and Sloss Eckhouse. Also, Verve brokered the deal.
