Netflix has handed out a second season order to Anne With an E, the adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, produced out of Canada.
The CBC, which airs the series north of the border as Anne, confirmed the season renewal on Thursday. Anne With an E, returning to Netflix in 2018, will again star Amybeth McNulty in the title role and is produced by Netlfix and the CBC.
The returning cast includes Geraldine James, R.H. Thomson and Lucas Jade Zumann. The series hails from Emmy-winning writer Moira Walley-Beckett (Breaking Bad) and is based on the famed book by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
Anne With an E centers on a young orphaned girl in 1890, who, after an abusive childhood spent in orphanages and the homes of strangers, is mistakenly sent to live with an elderly spinster and her aging brother. Over time, 13-year-old Anne transforms their lives and eventually the small town in which they live with her spirit, intellect and imagination.
Miranda de Pencier (Beginners) returns for the second season to executive produce under her Northwood Entertainment banner. The second season will have an all-female writers room, led by Walley-Beckett.
“Anne Shirley is one of Canada’s greatest gifts to the world. We can’t wait to bring Anne’s next chapter to Netflix members globally,” said Elizabeth Bradley, Netflix vp content, in a statement.
The executive producers are de Pencier, Walley-Beckett, Sally Catto, Elizabeth Bradley, Alex Sapot, Debra Hayward and Alison Owen. John Calvert will produce.
